About Us

Since he was 4 years old, Dave Pawlak has ice fished with both line and spears for pike and perch on Lake St. Clair. Growing up in Warren and a cottage in Fair Haven Dave ice fished with his father Ted in canvas and wood shanties far out on Anchor Bay.

About 20 years ago Dave decides to make his own spears for himself and friends. He enjoyed it so much he’s been making spears ever since. Dave’s spears are in some of the finest collections in the country, but these are not just “wall-hangers”, these are meant to be used and darkhouse anglers from Minnesota to Michigan have been using his spears with great success for many years.

Dave has his own tool & die shop, Northland Die & Engineering, where he creates his spears. He utilizes the latest CAD/CAM and CNC technology combined with the highest quality materials and genuine old world craftsmanship to produce the most durable, well designed, time tested products available anywhere.

Dave is also on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Darkhouse Angling Association and has been so since its inception. This is an organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of this historical tradition of being able to spear fish through the ice.

Darkhouse Gear and Tackle has been recently formed by Dave and we are dedicated to expose people of all ages to our sport and its historical ties with this ancient tradition, to promote their participation, and to encourage the bonding that this heritage creates between our citizens and our natural resources.

We are also committed to protecting and preserving our sport and historical rights for all people and for all times, while promoting the responsible use of our renewable fishery resources. Darkhouse fishing is as much a historical tradition as it is a sport for those who participate.
